Cherry Blossoms, Elf yourself and Christmas

Oh my so much I've been wanting to post, but I have been super busy with school, the holidays, birthdays and more!!

First and for most my heart goes out to those in CT. I plan on making some snowflakes and sending them to CT for the children when they return in January. There is an article out there from the huffingtonpost explaining more about this project. See link below!

Okay fun stuff that's been happening in room 29!

We are working on summary writing and one of the articles my class read was about Cherry Trees and the festival Japan has in April. Here is what I sent home with my kids today. A little bit of writing and a fun art project.

We have an art program at our school where a parent docent teaches an art lesson to the students. This month for December the kids had the chance to "Elf yourself." These turned out really cute and some of the drawings really look like my students. Fun and cute!!!

Christmas Break is finally here. Tomorrow the 21st is our last day, so I have a gift ready for my students and they are ready to participate in their book gift exchange!

Some other things happening...My baby boy is 5!! We celebrated his 5th birthday (Dec. 9th) at Disneyland. It was his first trip! He also just lost his first tooth tonight! Man what a great and exciting month for my little guy!!

December Currently...Favorite month!!

Wow my favorite month is finally here. We are ready for Christmas to come. House is decorated and all. We got everything ready last weekend after Thanksgiving. Boy am I glad we did. Yesterday I stayed home from work along with hubby and son. We all had the stomach flu. We slept most of the day away. I still sent my daughter to daycare so we could rest. She was fine until this morning when she was basically a couch potato on me for the first two hours she was awake. She has been sick most of the day today. Luckily we are all on the mend now so we can have a good rest of the weekend.

December is a busy month for us. Hubby, son and myself all have December birthdays, but not just us, my dad and older brother are also December babies. My son is turning 5 on the 9th and we have a Disneyland trip planned for him and a friend. He knows we are going, but not that a friend can go. I have already arranged it with his friend, she is a close friend of mine, so it works out easy. This will be Jameson's first trip to Disneyland! I love Disneyland and Christmas so this is the perfect time to go. I am so excited!!

What are you thankful for?

So, for the past 6 years I have been a kindergarten teacher. Do you know how hard it is to be teaching a new grade level? I am having a hard time trying to fit in "fun" holiday things. I had no idea how much there is to teaching an upper grade level. I enjoy teaching 4th grade and was able to finally do something fun with my students. My kids have been very patient. We just got finished with summative testing and writing tests. Report cards are done and conferences are next week. So here is what we did this week. I did this activity in kindergarten two years ago and decided to do it with my 4th graders. We talked about what we are thankful for and then for Homework on Monday night I gave them a feather template and they had to decorate it and write what they were thankful for. A few of my students are HUGE One Direction fans, so I had to tell them to be serious about this project or else I knew they would all come back and say they are thankful for One Direction...LOL Here is how our project turned out!

Report cards are coming up too quickly, but I brought everything home to work on this weekend. I love listening to music. I do when ever I can. My students are currently obsessed with One Direction. Especially one boy. I've gotten a few books from scholastic book club about One Direction and raffle them off and they go bonkers!!! hehe..I was totally the same with New Kids on the Block!

Class Read Aloud

So just curious to what kind of books you are reading aloud to your students. We just finished Judy Blume's Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing. My students got a kick out of that one. You can't get through the year with out reading that one.

We just started reading The Witches, by Roald Dahl. It's a perfect fitting for Halloween coming up.

It's been awhile since I've posted. Parent teacher conferences are coming up with means lots of grading and report card inputting. I'm barely keeping my head above water these days! Whew! Going to a new grade level is tough! Luckily I have a supportive team helping me through it!

Still here!!

I'm still here!! I've been super busy with school and my personal life! I don't even know where to begin. I come on every night to see if any of my blogger friends have any great ideas (which they do of course), but just haven't had the time to post.

Here is what i've been up to:

School Life:
I'm on the observation cycle this year, and my principal asked me to do a favor. She needed to teach the admin cadre of principals the evaluation cycle. So she asked me if they could come in my room and observe a lesson. I taught a new lesson to my class. We had just learned how to use a open number line to solve an addition problem in a teacher teacher training. I was super nervous leading up to the lesson. Once I started teaching it was like no one was in the room but me and my kids. I had about 6-7 administrators from our district even the assistant superintendent of instructional services. The lesson went great. I was pleased and got a great review from my principal! And a formal observation done and over with!!

Math Talks are happening at our school. I saw a co-worker with a poster of rules that I adapted to my class. Thanks Jalayne!!

Pictures to come soon from my lesson and the math talk! I need to take pictures of them.

Personal Life:
We are in full swing of soccer season. Jameson has been playing great! (To the best of his ability as a 4 1/2 year old)

I've made a personal goal to lose some weight. I started a diet and have lost 4 lbs in about a 1 1/2 weeks!

The weather is finally starting to cool down, thank goodness! We had a really hot September! A few days it reached to 100! Ouch! The kids are having fun playing at home and being goof balls!

My baby brother proposed to his girlfriend. They went to Yosemite and went on a hike and he proposed to her on the top of a cliff near a waterfall! Eeeee I'm so happy for them!!

Oh yeah FOOTBALL is ON in our house. We (my son and I) are CHARGER fans and Daddy and our daughter are RAIDER fans! Go Chargers!!! Mostly Aleena wears Charger stuff because that's what I put her in...hehe. I made the Jameson's shorts and Aleena's Charger dress in the second picture.

September Currently and Labor Day Weekend

Here is my September Currently and a few other things:

I am having a great Labor Day weekend. Friday night I crashed out super early. I think the weeks activities finally caught up with me. I was out before 9:00. Saturday I spent a few hours outside with the hubby and we did some yard work, ewww I know! Yesterday we went to my in-laws house for a BBQ it was SO much fun. Lots of family, friends, good food and swimming! Today we are just kicking back and being lazy. My niece is here hanging out with us, and I made her a hair bow. Yup, she's 13 and she wanted one of my home made bows. We took my son Jameson to Toys R Us and he spent some of his money on a brand new toy helicopter! He was super excited!! And now we are just relaxing and watching The Hunger Games.
Bow for my niece Kaila

Have a great week everyone!

Professional Development School

Today was full of collaboration and motivation. The school I work at is a professional development school and other districts come to our school for training in the Essential Elements of Instruction (EEI). I joined a cohort with some colleges from my school where we are re-visiting the EEI strategies and  have become the go to teachers for the visitors that come to our school. Today we had high school teachers from other districts near by to learn the EEI strategies. I had a half day sub and we got to join the training presented by my principal. Today's focus was active participation. We had the opportunity to go into classrooms at our school to see how our teachers us those EEI strategies. It's great to get into other teachers rooms. It was a nice learning experience and I am very proud to work along with some highly talented staff! Part of the cohort training I'm involved in will allow for the outside visitors to come into my classroom to observe lessons and how to implement the different EEI strategies. I love that even though I'm not in college anymore, there is always room for expanding my learning as a teacher.

Survived week 1

Wow what a week. I am excited to say that I have successfully completed my very first week of fourth grade. It was great to get back into the swing of things.     My class is great. I've been kind of MIA from the blog because I've been exhausted from teaching and back to school night and my own kids! Back to school night was successful, even thought I was very nervous.  Thank you to all my parents who attended, 30/34 not to bad!! Maybe it was because I was new to the grade level? Hehe. I have the best team members that have been VERY supportive this week! Thank you Ms. Cochran and Ms. Altieri!!!

New students..almost ready!

Wow, school is officially here. We kicked off our first day back yesterday with a half day staff meeting. It was nice to see everyone and hear about all the exciting things all my colleagues did over summer. Then we had the rest of the afternoon for ourselves to work in the classroom. I got a lot done with my team members, Miss. Cochran and Miss. Altieri! They are amazing. Since this is my first year in 4th grade, they have been very accepting of me and are being good sports about all my question asking!

Today we had a district wide training with our common grade level about the common core standards. The subject was Math and it was very helpful to me being new to the grade! We spent half the day at the training collaborating and learning ways to teach different strategies to our students. The rest of the afternoon our team went back to our school and planned the whole first week of school! I feel so accomplished!

Tonight from 4-5 our school was open for it's 3rd annual posting party. The class lists were posted on the walls outside our school and then the parents and students had the opportunity to come in a meet the teachers and check out their classroom.  I had about 10 students and families come in and visit. It was great meeting new faces and seeing some familiar faces of these 4th graders that I had as kindergartners a few years back! :) I also enjoyed seeing about 10 of my previous students stopping by to say hi!

Tomorrow is a whole day of prep for me. No meetings! Woo Hoo! I am going to get my last minute things organized and get names on name tags and get ready for Monday morning.

My first Made it Monday!

So I'm linking up with Tara over at 4th Grade Frolics for my first Made it Monday! I'm so excited. This whole blogging experience has been fun!

I found some really cute posters and letters from
She has some really cute posters. I printed some of them out and then got them laminated. I also found some alphabet letters from the same website and I cut them out and laminated them as well. I plan to use them for my leveled library. I haven't put them up yet, tomorrow! :)

I also couldn't pass up this cute offer. I've been obsessed with the whole "Owl" theme. My daughter's first birthday in April was owl themed. I wasn't sure how 4th grade would be and if Owl's were too childish, but I decided they weren't!  My friend told me about some cute owl spiral notebooks at our local 99 cent store, so of course I had to go get a few! A few will be for me and a few for my treasure box!

Last few days of vacation!!

Well, I officially go back to work on Wednesday the 15th. Mostly for meetings and finishing up some prep work in the classroom. I have just a few days left to spend time with my kids. We have done a lot of swimming and beach trips this summer since we weren't able to make it to the Colorado River. The in-laws just re-did their pool and we were able to start swimming again as of yesterday. At the beginning of the summer, my son Jameson was still a little bit scared of the water. It's a whole different story now!! My mom offered to put him in swim lessons, but with kinder camp, the ISTE conference and camping and everything else, we decided to wait. Besides, I didn't think he would do well with someone else other than me. Well let me say that I have a little swimmer that is brave and daring! I'm so proud of him and his accomplishments this summer with swimming. He swam so much today that he passed out on the couch before 8:00!! Here are some fun swim pictures of him swimming and the newly re-finished pool at the in-laws.

Floaties and a ring is how he started off swimming this summer.

Brave and proud to be swimming with now floaties or ring!

Swimming all by himself.

The tropical get away at my in-laws less than a mile from my house. Needless to say I'll be spending the last few days here relaxing by the pool with the kids. Oh and it's been HOT!! It's been in the 90's for the last few days and it's suppose to stay warm in the upper 80's for the rest of the week.

Getting there...

Well I spent another 4 hours in my room today..well okay maybe 3 1/2 because I was out cruising and catching up with some other teacher friends! hehe. Here are a few pictures of my room getting closer to being ready for students.

I got this idea from Hilary over at Fifth Grade Fancy
I plan on using this i help in my class somehow. I thought it was a really cute idea. I also saw it on pinterest. Gotta love Pinterest!!

I had some cupboards/cabinets that I wanted to save but the stuff on the shelf isn't really that pretty, so I covered it with some of the left over material I had from my walls.

I scraped sticky stuff off these cupboards for about 30 minutes. I am very pleased on how they turned out!

This is another Pinterest idea that I saw. I made some class journals with specific topics. I plan on being the first one to write in the journals so they have a model. I plan on using these as a center rotation.
I have had this black board for quite a few years and when I was teaching kindergarten I couldn't really find a way to use it. I think I may have for 4th grade. When we have specific words we are focusing on they will go on this board! So fun!!

Simple 99 cent baskets with cute new labels that I found on pinterest. I LOVE PINTEREST!! haha
This I already posted about in my "productive day" but I thought I'd post it again because I think it's fun!
So my mom gave me this storage bin. It used to hold fabric of hers, then it held toys at her house for my kids to play with. I just added some scrapbook non fade construction paper in the front and's going to hide a whole bunch of stuff and still look nice!! :)

Seeing two of my team members today got me really excited for my new adventure in 4th grade. I am very excited! Bring it on 4th grade!! School starts August 20th!!!

Okay so here's something I tried from "Oh boy 4th Grade"

B2S Must Haves
1. I must have my class set of 1 cent folders from Office Depot. They are good homework folders or subject folders to keep papers in student desks.
2. Spiral Bound Note books. I bought 70 of them from WalMart for only 17 cents a notebook. I will use them for Language Art and Math. Each student will get 2. Yes I have 34 students in a class.
3. I recently inherited a small laminator from a friend and it has become very useful in setting up my classroom this year as I am new to 4th Grade.

Well after lots of frustrating trials and errors and reading tutorials online, I finally fixed my blog and like the way it is. Thank you to for teaching me how to add a grab button and how to get rid of that annoying transparent background! Whew! Let the blogging begin!! Now I just need followers! Hehe!!

New Room...New Decorations!

So back at the end of the school year I was able to work in my new classroom for a day and I decided that I wanted to try something different. I went with fabric wall bulletin boards instead of fadeless paper. I got my fabric from walmart and spent about 30 dollars, which is about what I would have spent on fadeless. I then took my fabric to Lake Shore and matched as best as I could with boarders. I think they came out pretty good!  I'm getting eager and a excited about setting up a new room!

My college wall. Cal State University San Marcos!
