November Currently

Linking up with Ohboy3rdgrade for the November currently! What a busy few weeks it's been. I am glad we made it through the week.

We had a spirit week for Red Ribbon Week. It was great. Our 5th graders even did a flash mob at flag salute on Friday to Michael Jackson's Thriller. My kids and I had a great time trick-or-treating. I am happy Halloween is over. My favorite month is even closer, December. It's full of birthdays and holiday fun. Can't wait! Now I just have to get through report cards, parent teacher conferences and Thanksgiving!

My Red Ribbon Door

Listening- Two and a Half Men-I heard it's the last season?? Catching up tonight on some shows.
Loving-The fact that Thanksgiving and Christmas are soooo close. My favorite time of year.
Thinking-Anyone else notice the massive amount of grading now with Common Core and the fact that it takes forever to grade?
Wanting- From the 90's-80's to rain today in the past few weeks, I am loving this break in the weather. Rain is wonderful!!!
Needing- We are heading out to the desert next weekend, so hubby and I are spending this weekend getting everything ready.
Reading- I love all of Nicholas Sparks' books. I am reading the Best of Me and it's good!

Here are some fun pictures from Halloween! :)

Happy Fall!

New Reward System

So after teaching kindergarten for 6 years, I've found it quite difficult to reward my 4th graders. Not all 4th graders like your "typical" treasure box items. I've seen this reward system before and am excited to implement it into my class this year.

A teacher friend of mine uses it and she sent me the background template and I simply filled in the type of rewards I thought 4th graders would enjoy.

I recently ordered 250 free business cards from vistaprint.com (only had to pay for shipping) I plan on using this as a punch reward system. Students will earn punches in class for completing homework, being helpful, team player and other positive behaviors. Once they have earned enough punches they can then trade in their punch card for an award.

August Currently and Summer happenings

Happy August and Back to School!! I am linking up with Ohboy3rdgrade with this month's currently. We have been a super busy family this summer and I wouldn't have any other way. It's been nice to not think about work or my classroom and just enjoy summer with my kids. Here is my currently and after I'll share what we've been up to this summer.
Summer 2014:

In July we had my sister's wedding. I posted about that last month. Pictures of my cute little ring bear and flower girl are in July's currently post.

We went camping in Julian, at KQ Ranch. My older brother and his family came too. We had a great time. There was a lot of fishing, playing games and swimming that weekend.
Hanging out in camp.

Panning for gold, like mommy teaches her 4th graders.

Home away from home!
We've gone to the beach numerous times and swam at my parents pool too. We spent one day down in San Diego. I showed my kids where mommy stays the night on the Star of India ship with her students when we go on the overnight field trip. There is a new park down there with a water play area and the kids had a blast there.

San Diego Waterfront Park
Just the other day I went with a friend and our kids to Vista Air. It's a trampoline park and that was way cool. It was fun for ALL ages. I hope the video works!
Trampoline Park- Get Air
Next week we are headed to Disneyland as our final summer activity. So exciting!!!

Wild Fires in San Marcos, California

Well, not how I expected to spend the last two days...off with no school. We recently experienced a very horrific fire in my hometown. My family was safe and did not need to evacuate. Although a very large portion of our city needed to evacuate and unfortunately many people lost their homes in the last few days.

It started on Tuesday when there was a fire in Rancho Bernardo, which is about 20 minutes away from San Marcos. Mind you we have had Santa Ana weather which is HOT temps, dry conditions, and WIND from the east. (desert) This weather is very typical for San Diego County. We normally don't see these conditions until Fall. Mother nature had a different plan for North County. (Large community north of San Diego with numerous cities) On Wednesday there was a fire in Carlsbad, Ca and it raced through canyons destroying homes. During this time 2-3 other fires popped up, one on Camp Pendleton's Military Base, Fallbrook, Escondido and San Marcos. The San Diego County office of Education closed most of the schools in North County for Thursday. At one point I believe we had 9 fires going in the county!!! Hmmm seems a little suspicious, don't you think?

Luckily we were on the right side of the city and did not need to be evacuated. We watched all the flames reach up to the hills in San Marcos and even threatened Cal State University San Marcos, where I went to school. Luckily the college was saved, but graduation ceremonies have been cancelled until next weekend.

My dad is a retired Fire Chief for the city of San Marcos. I was born and raised in the fire community. I have a brother and cousin who now serve as chiefs in San Marcos, and they were very busy. Lots of good thoughts were being sent out to ALL the firemen who came to help out our city. They came from LA and Orange County and Riverside County.

There was once again no school, today May 16th, but it is looking much better for my hometown. It is pretty smoky, but no huge threats this morning.

I am going to post pictures that I was able to take from my home and from around the city. One picture I have is not mine, I found it on Facebook from a resident in San Marcos. It is a picture of a DC10 air tanker that came in and saved a lot of homes on Wednesday. I was able to witness it dropping the red fire retardant, but it is not the picture below. It was however an amazing sight to see. It's not every day you see a airplane passenger jet so low in the city.

These 2 photos are some of the first few shots I got from my house.

Relief from above!

Night View from my neighbor's backyard. (Wednesday)

View from my roof Thursday afternoon.

From the park down the street from my house.

I am so glad things are winding down. Thank you to all the firemen and military who supported our city! San Marcos rocks!!!
